The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on 10 December 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly with the precise intent of preventing the recurrence of the atrocities committed during the Second World War.‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.’ Every individual is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set out in the Declaration without any distinction made to race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
